Synopsis:
Following the gruesome 9/11 terrorist attack on America, the Bush administration launched the war on terror in which Muslims became the targets and the victims. The American response heralded one of the darkest periods in world history. Muslims were seen as the enemy because of the 9/11, a view reinforced by other acts of terror by Muslim terrorists before and after 9/11. Although the vast majority of Muslims were innocent - and indeed endured greater suffering from all forms of terror - this view has remained firm, a belief which may be sourced from other than contemporary atrocities by Muslim terrorists. After Afghanistan, came Iraq and the Israeli free hand in the conflict against Palestinians as the US embarked on a ruthless neo-conservative foreign policy. The Muslim responsibility in this terrible period in history is not neglected in this collection of essays. If among Muslims life is cheap, is it any wonder that Muslim lives may be even cheaper to non-Muslims? However, this book fundamentally condemns the use of overwhelming American power against Muslims and their countries, and laments that US leadership was not exercised to address the injustices suffered by Muslims. The world could have been moved to become a better place after 9/11. Instead what followed was the attack on Muslims.

Comments:

A poorly-written book that lacks evidence and facts. The author takes it as a given that there is an ongoing and brutal post-9/11 backlash against Muslims in America and overseas, that fuels discrimination against followers of Islam. The fact that there is virtually no evidence for this assertion and much empirical data to argue for the opposite conclusion has not prevented him to continue to claim the existence of an attack on Muslims. Domestically, US FBI hate crime statistics consistently show attacks on Muslims are rare, and constitute a fraction of the far more prevalent bias crimes committed against Jews. Internationally, the US has the right to defend and responsibility to protect citizens in counter-terrorist or humanitarian situations -- see: Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. Washington enjoys positive and improving relations with Muslims all around the world via USAID, Lincoln Centers, and many diplomatic and cross-cultural outreach programs. The author is laughably mis-informed, and seems that he has met very few Americans or American policymakers.
